When I were a lad....
It seems a million years since my first e-cig arrived on the doormat, garbed in its bubble wrap envelope, together with its cartridges that claimed 12 cigarettes' worth of use.
These days, the choice, although much more vast on the surface, actually isn't. Where does the newbie, tyro, beginner actually need to start? Well, here's my suggestion for the absolute beginner's first purchase - one that will give him/her the best possible chance of making a successful transition from smoking to e-smoking.
Battery choice:
It has to be the Tornegoiva range - the Tornado, eGo, Riva. I'd plump for the 900 and 1000mAH sized batteries, purely because of their capacity and the likelihood of getting through a day without needing to re-charge, although the standard batteries are also very good...
Atomiser
Capacity is king, and the choices fairly extensive. I have an affinity with the XL Cartomiser - the Fat Carto. With a capacity of around 1.8ml at refill, two full fat cartos would get the average user through a day. The same can be said of the XL E2 r3, although, for both, the refill method might be a bit of a faff. For a more experienced user, this isn't so much of problem, but a beginning user may have slight faff-related issues. Would a Mega (or fat) atomiser help? I'm not so sure. There are leakage issues with the cartridges, and leakage is not something we like...
Standard atomiser - the ubiquitous 510 - and carts or dripping? Yes - as an intro, not too bad, easy enough to get along with, but, again, a bit of a faff at times, and require that you carry the usual spares and bottles of juice, so maybe not so convenient.
On balance, then, either Fat cartos or E2 cartos have the upper hand.
Charger
Has to be a fast USB with a USB wall wart. Accept no substitutes. That is all...
Juice or e-liquid
My first kit came with 14mg juice. It wasn't a high enough Nicotine level, and so I found myself emptying a battery every time I picked it up - I got no real "buzz" at all. Once I discovered 24mg juice, things changed. I could use my dinky little unit without draining the battery each time, and could easily replace my previous habit... So, for me, it has to be at least 24mg juice in the kit - you can always dilute with glycerin if it's too high, but beefing juice up is a whole other ball of wax.
The kit
So, for me, the ideal starter kit for today would be:
2 x Tornegoiva XL batteries 900 or 1000mAH
1 x Fast USB Charger with wall wart
10 x E2 or Mega Cartomisers (plus one of the other type, plus drip tip) filled
1 x filling syringe setup
30mlof 24mg e-juice, made up of 15ml each of RY4 and Tobacco.
A user manual that tells it like it is, and which has copious entreaties to visit this wonderful forum for advice and help.
The kit, then, would last the average beginning user a couple of weeks or more - plenty of time to experiment, plenty of time to order up more supplies to get into the third and subsequent weeks. The price? Well, that's got to be realistic from both sides - but I think £60 would be a very attractive price point - just slightly higher than a week's worth of smoking ready-made fags, and less that a fortnight's worth. And I think that a claim of "will give the average smoker two week's worth of joy" would be founded in fact, rather than inflated estimates...
But that's just me...
