Too many factors. Frankly, it won't stop Alzheimers occurring, else no smoker would get it, and we know that isn't the case. If there was a magic wand, wouldn't that be fantastic! Seriously, old age dementia must be the one thing everyone fears 'at a certain age' aside from cancer....

The study into smokers and alzheimers said that there was a 50% lower chance of smokers getting it. However, the results aren't clear cut as one study suggests that nicotine might hasten the development of tangles in the brain. (However, that was a study on mice's brain as opposed to actually observing actual results among smokers.)

Reminds me of the quip about prostate cancer:

"If masturbation did prevent prostate cancer there'd be no such thing as prostate cancer"

Yes, I think it could. There have been several serious peer-reviewed studies, I know - I looked into it once. And - if you can get the nic without the carcinogens...

R

Read a paper many years ago that made a direct link between smoking and increased brain activity, swore then I'd never give up nicotine and I haven't.
Sadly, there seems to be some genetic factor in true Alzheimers, still not enough research to confirm this, and it's regrettable that all dementias seem to be lumped together in people's minds under that title. I recall that, as a child, most of us had a "strange" Aunt or Granny in the house (not in a Home). This didn't seem to be the case with Uncles or Grandpas; in those days few women smoked, most men did. It's something to think about, but I'll stick with nicotine.
