From the Reuters article..

Quote

Researchers in Greece saw changes in the lung function of healthy smokers who puffed on an e-cigarette for just five minutes -- although it's not clear what the long-term result of those responses might be in regular e-cigarette users, the team reports in the journal Chest.

Link to the abstract of the research paper - http://chestjournal....1-2443.abstract (the full paper is not free).

Quote

E-cigarettes assessed in the context of this study were found to have immediate adverse physiologic effects after short term use that are similar to some of the effects seen with tobacco smoking, however the long term health effects of e-cigarette use are unknown but potentially adverse and worthy of further investigation.

IMO, I can't see that this "research" is helpful. It does not look at anything genuinely useful like comparison of lung function in smokers over a period of time, after switching to e-cig use.

At best it proves never vapers may experience irritation the very first time they use an e-cig. In fact it's not even clear whether the research was carried out on smokers or non smokers - the abstract contradicts itself on this point. And it sounds like a bizarre test. The control group apparently puffed on an e-cig without a cartridge attached?? Weird.

on April,it'll be 3 years of savage vaping for me and my lungs are ok....When the doctors visit me on routine check-ups,they don't even ask me if I smoke...wiche they always do when I used to smoke the stinky fags....

“Zeus, all you other gods, grant that this child, my son, may become, like me, pre-eminent among the Trojans,
as strong and brave as me. Grant that he may ruleTroy with strength. May people someday say,as he returns from war, ‘This man is far better
than his father.’ May he carry back bloody spoils from his slaughtered enemy, making his mother’s heart rejoice.”

I think research of most kinds has it's merit in one way or another once you take into account the credibility of the source and methods used. Poor research can tell you things it wasn't aiming to do based on our ability to deduce.

It is a sensetive time for vaping though and the wrong results at the wrong time could be an issue whether correct or in correct so I can see where you're coming from.

I personally really want to know what the health implications are.

My current opinion on what they say here is that, based on my personal experience only, there is a decrease in lung function imediately after vaping which, in my opinion, is caused by the capilaries tightening. The thing is, and this is the significant difference, the function returns quickly after stopping and would seem to do so by 100 percent.

I just hope I'm right. I am experiencing a tickly cough lately. It could be a number of things of course but this just goes to show the vairiables that need taking into consideration and just how far we've got to go before we really know anything for sure.

Thanks for sharing PapaLazarou : )

The first three drags I took on an e-cig made me cough like hell. After that it was plain
sailing. I think your body just needs to adapt to the new kind of 'smoke' and that this
seems to happen very quickly.

I can honestly say that I have only experienced positive effects during the now 100 days
since I stopped smoking cigarettes. I can climb stairs without feeling tiredness in my legs.
I can walk fast up hills without getting out of breath, plus no lingering cough after my
last cold!

Debate exists as to the scientific evidence for their claims that e-cigarettes have no health related ramifications.

i dont make such claims i am not entirely sure who (their) does ether.. short term my lungs function better as an e smoker than they did as a tobacco smoker..

i dont cough like sh-t any more.. :)

trog

ps.. not coughing like sh-t any more is enough for me.. i avoid too many hills and other such strenuous stuff.. i can climb them if i have too but i could do that when i coughed like sh-t.. as long as i avoided too many fags on the way up.. he he

i became an e smoker for genuine health reasons.. so far its looking reasonably okay i am three and half years in..

There's always going to be shoddy and unscientific studies such as this one, it's an inevitable consequence of the threat to BT and Pharma interests.

There are probably studies that show simply breathing in general has shown 'adverse lung function' too.

Heavily biased pseudo-science..these types imagine that sticking a lab coat on, talking in loose science jargon and feigning a dispassionate demeanour will give them credibility..maybe 10 - 20 years ago, before the internet..not now.

I love spicy food, heavy on the hot chilli...although on occasion it can cause an 'adverse arse function'.

The study doesn't compare the effects of having a cigarette to that of an ecigarette - so it is not explained if the effects are 'normal' for the inhalation of nicotine, being a toxin, which may well have even more adverse effects with tobacco!

Is this the same Greece that's trying hard to justify banning ecigs at the same time as introducing a horrendous hike in tobacco taxes in order to 'safeguard the health of it's citizens'?

Yes my initial thoughts were something along those lines. The paper referring to "healthy" smokers for example. "Better to stick to approved and taxed Greek cigarettes than try one of those nasty electronic things" they could almost be saying.

Here's a link to the full version of the paper - http://www.lungenaer...0ed30c6b30d.pdf

And a critical piece on the study (or more specifically the spin being applied it) by Dr Siegel in the US - http://tobaccoanalys...ontrast-to.html

If we (generally) non-scientists can spot such glaring holes in Pseudo-research than only those with an agenda are likely to use it.
I can't find the reference (making it fairly worthless) but i had a quote from a London based consultant stating that he believed patients were better off Vaping for the rest of their lives than smoking for another month! (lost when laptop died!)

I have carried out my own research. If you blow cigarette smoke directly at a spider it will run away. If you blow ecig water vapour at the same spider, it ignores it.
