Call me cynical, but it could just be an attempt to try and boost sales by big pharma by opening up a 'new market'. Whether there's any truth to it or not is dificult to say, but if there is a benefit then it's good news for nic vapers and if it takes pressure off the patch manufacturers, then maybe they might get off the vaping ban bandwagon and that could be even better news.

http://www.bbc.co.uk...health-11622484 -hmm either nicotine helps or it doesn't, I love the one science for one another science for another approach to marketing. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. It's seems to me that the soundbite of pharma. is "nicotine is safe if you buy our products, but not if you buy anyone else's." where does vaping stand in this. Unfortunately they maybe shooting themselves in the mouth with this. If they have a scientific basis to say their products are safe, they also prove the same for vaping.

The scientists are talking about nicotine and not nicotine patches. In the title and introduction, there's no mention of patches:

Nicotine treatment of mild cognitive impairment: A 6-month double-blind pilot clinical trial
Stimulation of brain nicotinic receptors may be helpful in patients with early signs of cognitive impairment. This study on cognitive performance and clinical status in 67 nonsmoking patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment demonstrated that nicotine treatment improved cognitive performance along with subject-rated measures of memory symptoms. This study has been attacked more than once in the last few days- one person said they might be 'lazy made up stats' and the dummy placebo misinterpreted. It's a small scale, double blind study in a serious peer-reviewed, high impact factor scientific journal that suggests that nicotine may have some beneficial effects on cognitive impairment, but it is being interpreted as an attack. It could lead to further larger studies. The only people shooting themselves in the mouth here are us.

There has also been some speculation/research in the use of nicotine as an antidepressant.....
