Cheers for that Scrumpy, i feel the same way about pharma stuff too.

Deffo will be looking into the Kava and Rhodiola too.

Both legal are they?

(the only other thing that did me any real benefit was an illegal 'herb'...i can't talk about that on here, never mind afford it)

Great post, scrumpy. I've taken a host of supplements for many years - St John's Wort is a must for me.
Wondered about Kava, now will give it a go. Hips Xrayed 7 years ago, pretty bad and they offered me a place on a waiting list and anti-inflammatories - thanks, but no thanks. Have taken Glucosamine Chondroitin and MSM ever since and still on hind legs, so here's to the supplements.

Hi, Rhodiola is legal you can get it from holland and barret its like taking a really strong cup of coffee it will make you feel wide awake and alert, the soviets used to give this stuff to their cosmonauts / soldiers / athletes. Some say it's good for depression but who knows try it and see.

Kava on the other hand is a grey area. It's not "illegal" in this country, in fact it used to be classed a herbal / nutritional product until the liver damage stories came out about ten years ago, when the kava craze started in europe. Basically the plant has been consumed for 3000 odd years buy the polynesian countries and they have had no ill effects because they only consume the safe part of the plant ( the roots). Ten years ago the herbal manafacturers where not only buying the roots, they were also buying the stems / leaves which are poisonous! They were grinding them down with the root and selling it and unfortunatly someone got liver damage form it and most western governments panicked and banned it except america which kept it on the market (This was because kava is part of hawaii culture). Recently though the EU has lifted its import ban on Kava and you can get it if you know where to look.

In the UK is not illegal to import it and use it, only illegal if you sell it for human consumption (as the ban comes from the food standards agency not the MHRA) but it can be sold for "soap making purposes" ;)

*Edit*

If anyone is going to try Kava, avoid the capsules they are rubbish, you wont feel a thing. You need to get Kava root powder and make a drink from it. It tastes horrible but you get used to the flavour. Some people add chocolate or coconut to smooth out and mask the taste.
