it's all very well, but i'd like to know exactly what happened, and what batteries/mod were involved...

From Whispering Rolygate? No detail and no useful information supplied then I imagine...
If you're going to report these kind of events then facts are the only creditable details worth reporting and yet there are none - RG is too pre-occupied with the prospect of litigation or libel (America's favourite game show) to make his post remotely useful or informative, thereby reducing it to salacious purient tittle-tattle.
Give us the facts Beardo!

nobody is deluding themselves mate, it's just that i think it's been posted a couple of times before the update, ans i think some may assume it was going over old ground.
anyone stacking batteries should be definitely be made well aware of the risks, though as Jaded says, would be nice to have the facts here...

After reading through all the original posts relating to this explosion, I don't think there are any facts.
The poster who made the report was new to the forum and since posting has not returned.
The last one I seem to remember was where someone stacked freshly charged 123's.
Problem was the batts were not rechargeable hence the issue.
Best to remember the protection on most batts is for under and over charge.
The short protection is a metal strip running the length of the battery.
When directly shorted this heats up until it breaks.
That said a devise with short protection will kick in before the batt protection works.
Most folks use fused springs these will collapse if the batt gets hot.
Other units use regulation chips that cut out when there is a direct short or over draw of current.
I’ve had a couple of units come back with collapsed springs and could not find a single short on the units. Turns out the user was trying to use a multi meter to see the voltage and kept crossing the meter leads.
I’m not saying this report is total crap, but some of the things that were supposed to have happened just don’t ring true. “the adapter was blown to bits” for one.
This must have been on hell of a bang!!
I have tried to get a battery to explode a number of times, standing at the end of the garden with the camera at the ready to capture the action.
However in every devise I’ve tried to blow them up in all I get is a hot unit.
For example the SD tried it in that got warm, spring shrank as it should do, unit cooled.
The SB was the same as was my LG.
I know Trog had warm parts after a batt made contact with some Keys in his pocket, I think he’s fully intact.
I suppose we are now going to have the no mod is safe discussion all over again.
And we must force a set of rules on modders for features that must be included to protect the user. When in fact those in most cases are in place and have been for years.
The one thing a mod maker cannot protect against is user error!!

It's a bit scary to think about the number of li-ons etc that are going to landfill. By the time the Bromags run over them a few times we could have some serious underfloor heating!

Found this info on the rechargeable batteries page on ECF, Just above half way down the page
UPDATE 2012-01-21 - The most serious mod battery explosion ever reported has taken place. It involved a pair of Tenergy Li-FePo4 cells in series. We have warned about these cells for at least a year.

Does this mean that all mod makers must now provide a disclaimer when selling a mod to say. "that this device is used at the owners risk, and electronic cigarettes can explode". !!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks guys

My other hobby are RC Models and I must say I never have any problem with lipo batteries and I´m talking about 7,4v and 11,1v 5000mAh units with 50-60C but some years ago I had a fire on my rc bag with two 7,2v Nimh , accidents happen , it´s important to know what we are dealing about but there´s no reason for panic , use good quality batteries always , for two reasons security and vapour production
