No, maybe my apologies to you, Scott... Women do still get a good slapping, and it's a term of language, however I don't like. And I don't particularly care for it even if it's against men for that matter. We don't slap people, end of, or give them a good kicking for that matter, and I actually overheard a manager at Tesco this year tell his boss (I assumed) in the store, within my earshot, that was how he was gonna treat a member of his staff.
I was in a pub not long ago when an excuse for a man at the bar, rather worse for drink, announced that he was off home to give his wife a good slapping... and his mates all laffed. I felt sick. Sorry, but I actually think he meant it... and it's just a term I really hate.

This is true, and as somebody who has seen domestic violence within her own family believe me I know it's not a subject to joke about. However, that line was not meant literally in any way, shape or form.

I think we all know it wasn't meant literally speaking, but even 'as a joke' or a figure of speech it is, at least to me, not a matter to joke about, not in these times. Sorry, I'm a cool kinda guy not usually given to preaching or even necessarily PC myself at times, but there's just some stuff we need to be rid of, and joking about giving people a slap or even a kicking is an example. I enjoy a joke often, I have a good sense of humour, but same as you Jackie, maybe it's because I've some 'experience', which I won't go into, I just don't see the funny side of that kind of joke, and I don't want to be persuaded it's OK. Add, as a public service worker myself I really don't want anyone to suggest I deserve any kind of 'physical violence' if i don't meet their (unreasonable) expectations. Add I have been violently assaulted doing my job. But that is just my opinion, and I'm apologising if I come across as a bit of a party pooper.

xjohnuk, Scott used a figure of speech/common phrase that is so rarely used for its literal meaning that many people like myself with Asperger's that grew up around such phrases do not hear it in the literal sense as could be expected. It is impossible to remove all phrases we grew up with that may cause others concern from our everyday language, as I well know from saying to a customer once that some supermarket toilets were closed because they were a public health hazard (who subsequently complained and I got a bollocking, despite the sinks and toilets overflowing which I personally thought would've sounded a LOT worse).
If we removed all references with potentially violent connotations from everyday colloquialisms and aphorisms when speaking/writing informally, your original post wouldn't be allowed to be whittled down to 'don't kick her when she's down' nor would skinning cats be allowed to be mentioned (think I saw that one make it into this thread). 'Friends' in forums, as in pubs, are very unlikely to communicate using formal speech - point in case, this response may appear condescending or aggressive because I am too formal when being informal is 'normal' and 'expected' and adding a single

Of course, I know that... it goes without saying. But general statements referring to people getting or even deserving a good slap seems somehow bizarre, but then I'm a bit daft. It's only a 'figure of speech' after all... particularly where a woman is involved. Having said that, most remedies for a woman's 'ills' was to be given a good &^%$$@#*, and we know what we're on about... you know you want it.

Another common phrase used to be 'spaz' or 'crip' relating to the disabled... we don't condone that these days, do we?
We don't so much like the word poofter either, as funny as that is maybe to some. Or Lezbo for that matter... do I deviate?
Is it really appropriate for a manager to suggest that he gives an employee 'a good kicking' as part of his solution to resolution of a personnel problem? No... it isn't. Even if privately, let alone in earshot of others. This is the sort of thing which IS unacceptable, sod PC or anything, but typical of two macho blokes sadly - you couldn't imagine this language of a female manager, could you? Can you imagine if that employee, a woman as it happens as I got her name too, got wind of that conversation? "I'll give her a good kicking"? Sorry... absolutely horrible and totally not appropriate. Hell, I seem to be on my own here, so... I'm drawing a line under this. Uncomfortable stuff I know...

Nothing I said was anything to do with the other drama that's been going on and I'm hardly even reading the 'slapping' discussion. Sorry, it's not that I don't care or don't agree or don't want to know ... it's just that I'm howling at the moon .... as per expectations.
Please pay no attention to anything I say or post, I'm not judging or advising or anything else, I'm on another planet.

Most of them have a small team of people whose job is to deal with protest contacts and deflect them with copy and paste responses rather than waste time trying to address their concerns. They try to avoid getting associated with protests.
