Article from The Publican.

Quote

Amanda Sandford of ASH-UK said: "Despite claims to the contrary, there is no evidence of overall harm to the licensed trade. In fact, alcohol on-sales licences increased by five per cent in the first year following the smoking ban.”

"True, many traditional pubs have closed, but more licensed premises have opened in recent years that now sell food as well as alcohol,” she added.

OK,,,,you got me!! :banghead:

Yeah... traditional pubs have been closed to be replaced [typically in urban areas] by [expensive] trendy cafe/restaurant/ bars... or just bars, also replacing many of our other retail uses, so that some high streets are just takeaways and bars, whilst the pub round the corner shuts down, or becomes a 'cesspit' for drunks and ASB. This kinda place which is very very far removed from a friendly British local pub as you can get... add these are ALL targeted at yer student, or 20/30 something age group professionals, or the worse of drinkers, but there's profit in volume... and now, nowt to do with the 'community' they serve...

The smoking ban hasn't helped, but there really has to be more to it than that? Posted Image

Btw... I'll add that many pub premises 'owners', as many are not actual breweries nowadays but investors, are strangling the life out of their tenants financially... the new tenant spends a fortune, and as soon as he/she begins to make a bob, they want half of it. As soon as the tenant loses a bob, it's not their problem. The whole pub thing is actually very complex. MOST smokers will actually tolerate going outside for a fag... as long as what is offered smoke-free indoors is compensation enough. I'm not sure that vaping indoors will be enough to save the souls of what is left of the 'pubs' we knew...

PS Second edit... a good number of pub/bar/club goers actually PREFER a room not filled with fag smoke. That includes many smokers imho... before the smoke ban no one argued how many potential pub users were put off by smoke filled rooms?

Indeed. If we can vape, everyone's a winner.

Allegedly, people were going to flock to pubs filled with glee when they stopped being smoke filled.....

E-cigs are not "quit smoking" devices - they are an alternative way to smoke, but with a much reduced risk profile. Believe this - it's true. E-cig users are NOT quitters.

It's a pity non smokers are too thick to avoid places that smokers go. It's like they have to follow us round just so they can do the fake cough and tell us we're killing them. No matter where we go, they want to be there too so we can't smoke.

It's because us 'smokers' are the most fun people to be around. Non smokers need to be around us to get their laughs. We do not need to be around them,,,they can fakecough!! :D

I well remember that Sunday when the ban came into force and visited a real ale favourite pub of mine out in the sticks. I got off the bus to see that since my previous visit the the sunday before, that a smoking shed had sprung up.It was constructed of rusic logs and furnished with comfy chairs and tables complete with ashtrays and large screen tv. I then noticed that the shed was full of smokers complete with their kids in tow :hissyfit:

That's child abuse now apparently :skeptical:

They chuck smokers out and people who hate smoke can't avoid walking through it on the streets. They complain that kids shouldn't even see smoking but won't let smokers stay out of the way. Some areas ban smoking outside, some employers won't take on smokers and some housing is no smoking.

So for a legal product that can't be connected to any second hand deaths or reliable negative health effects to non smokers it's doing pretty well. We can buy it and pay extortionate taxes, we can be stigmatised, marginalised and lied about and we're not even allowed to use it.

Aye they drove us out of the pub to smoke outside through wind and hail. Then when the publicans built beer gardens etc to try and keep their regular custom, you could guarantee the fair weather boozers would at the first hint on sunshine start to whining about having to sit in the garden with the horrible smokers. They should all eff off back to their own gardens if they dont like it :throwball:

Smoking ban saved me a fortune in all honesty. I use to enjoy sitting in a crowded smoky pub on a winter's evening. Now I just don't bother. Non-smokers can keep their fart smelling pubs and enjoy watching them close.

I thought the division created would fade away but it clearly hasn't. Before I left my last job, work gatherings were basically over. People would rather go to someone's house, watch a film and drink than goto pubs in a bigger group.

They got their wish and now they are moaning about the consequences.

Yeah its quite hilarious really, the boring none smoking inquisitors used to like going to lively pubs for our company and didn't like the smoke. It wasn't until the interesting characters had gone did they realise that they didn't like being left alone with other miserable soft drink bootleggers :talktohand:

Actually I'm wrong, they did realise, thats why they didn't allow seperate smoking areas or special smoking pubs. They wanted to get rid of the smoke but keep the characters (they hoped to reform) in the same place as them :p Oh well, all I can say to those cream tea mafiosa is, it didn't work, ner ... ner . na .... ner ner. :marchmellow:

If the smoking ban reduced the amount of smoking by 10% then smoking ban has cost all the non smokers about £40 per year each in lost taxes.

Shame the government didn't let them all know that before bringing in the ban hehehehe

Many of the non smokers didn't really care about a smoking ban either way - If they were told it would cost them £40 a year then they might have cared a bit more about smokers rights.
