This has always been a problem for a group of people wishing to get ecigs into pubs and get smokers to use them whilst there. Two years ago awareness of ecigs was not as it is now. To get e-smoking accepted in pubs, we had to distance ourselves from the words smoke and smoking as smoking was banned in pubs (still is) - so the word vaping was chosen as it was the only other commonly used term - some used fogging or steaming, but they never caught on.

CAM-VIP was chosen as a name to mimic CAMRA plus to include the VIP as everyone would like to think they are VIPs - however, two years down the line, the term vaping does not attract the majority of smokers :( They see it as something shady, druggyfied or illegal. Since our aim is to get smokers using ecigs in pubs, we have had to adjust our terminology and revert back to e-cigs, e-smoking, e-smoker and even e-bacconist to ignite their interest.

The ecigs that a smoker (who has no intention of switching) is attracted to are auto-battery look-a-likes unless the time is taken by someone to educate them. If you sell ecigs on a market stall or in a shop, you have that face-to-face contact and more importantly the time to do that. If you are selling them in a pub, the time factor is not there and education away from the look-a-likes has to be done via leaflets or guiding the smoker in the direction of good simple websites and forums.

I must admit to being mixed about the whole terminology thing

I like the whole idea of distancing ourselves from 'smoking' simply because of the anti smoking laws, especially in pubs. Not because I'm anti-smoking note. The fact is we don't produce 'smoke'. I am happy to say I am vaping. To me its a better experience

On the other hand if someone asks me what I have in my hand I dont call it a 'vaporiser' or PV..I call it an 'e-cig'

Quite co-incidentally tonight I went into one of my locals (a rare occurrence I know) because I lost my Don and wondered if I'd left it there. I asked if they had found my vaporiser (thinking they may know it as vaping..not the Plasterers btw)..blank look..I then said my 'ecig'..and a look of enlightment filled her face and she went to look behind the counter..

I dunno Russ, not sure what your real point is. I'm not sure calling it e-smoking will change anything. I tend to mix my terminology anyway. I'm happy with the term CamVIP too

As far as lookalikeys are concerned I dont see any. I really dont. The only vapers I see (apart from the Norwich UKV crew and my friends) use a variety of better gear..I see Rokstar users..510-Ts.People I don't know. I have yet to come across anyone openly using the equivalent of a social smoker or elite etc either in the pub or elsewhere

I walked past a guy sucking on an ego in the high street the other afternoon

Not sure where I'm going with this but I'm content to say I'm vaping on an e-cig and let the questions flow

I sit in my local regularly. I see other regulars who know what I'm doing.I see other folk looking curious and will enquire. I see others see what I'm doing but roll up at the bar and go outside and never ask me what I'm doing. Its all good. I'm accepted is the point.

I'm not convinced that a change in terminology will change anything

I am happy with the term e-cig, but I've never liked the term 'Vape' - not least because the word 'Vapist', especially if uttered with a German accent, conjures up a picture which could easily be miscontrued by the uninitiated.
Personally, I prefer, with the aid of the little light on the end of my 'stick', to simply 'glow'.
That said I find that the unitiated can also be confused by the statement "I'm going out for a glow" so when in general company I tend to say 'I'm going out for a puff'.
Fortunately, this has not yet been misconstrued ... :)
Horses snort - Gentlemen vape - Ladies merely glow ....

I have to admit I find the term 'vaping' a bit, well, naff.
Can't think of anything else to call it though - and if I find it necessary to announce that I'm nipping out for a vape I often say "Just going out for a drag".

Cheers,

Steve

I think we've all fooled ourselves for long enough!

Just because what you're blowing out is a vapour, doesn't alter the fact that you are "smoking". You might not like that, but you must agree that it's true.

You are just "smoking" an alternative that is safer. It's like saying "I'm not running, I'm walking fast!"

Personally, I prefer the term E-smoker as opposed to vaper.

Just going to settle down now and have an e-smoke with my coffee! ;)

If anyone shows interest i usually call mine a vapouriser, If they still look a little confused i add that its the same principle as a e ecig. When the guys at work ask if im going for a smoke i always give a wry smile and call it a steam. Not sure i like the term e smoker myself, for a start there's no smoke involved, secondly it sounds like something you'd do online. ( ukvapers lol).

We got all PC a few years ago by calling them personal vapourisers.. but "e-cig" is better IMO...

An e-cig.. not a real cig...

OK. Lets's say you've just drank four pints of water.

You go for a drive and are involved in an accident.

The police arrive and the first thing they ask you is "Have you been drinking?"

yes but, no but, yes but, no but,....... ;),
