Yep.. shame you missed that golden opportunity...
Gosh Andy, bet those abscesses were painful, you must be feeling better without them, if still a little sore.

Regarding the whole "no smoking when going under" thing, I suspect it's because smoking is known to activate platelets, thereby increasing the risk of blood clots during surgery which is obviously undesirable. However, it seems that the increased platelet activation is not due to nicotine itself, but something else in tobacco smoke:

Some surgeons probably think the clotting effect is due to nicotine itself and would therefore recommend not vaping before surgery.
Good news for us, as it means vaping nicotine doesn't increase the risk of a coronary plaque causing myocardia infarction! Probably best to stay on the asprin at a certain age though.

Hey i'm glad everything went well for you and thanks loads for answering this one because it's something you don't think about until it dawns on you and i myself would have been in a terrible state flapping about wondering can i vape or not.

I would say that nicotine is likely to delay wound healing a little by reducing blood flow slightly. I think the moral of the story is to be open and honest with your doctor and take their advice. I just paid my anaesthetist bill today, I would have resented it if I wasn't allowed to vape but a happy patient means happy to pay

Been wondering about this myself. I will be having open heart surgery for valve replacement before too long and had decided to switch to no nic while i was in dock. But after discussing it with a mate who had bypass surgery and the fact that they will split my breastbone up the middle I am now wondering if it might be better not to risk anything that might make me cough. At least until I am fully healed and pain free.

Sorry to hear you have to go through that sort of trauma, not nice huh. Do you have the opportunity to chat with your surgeon about it before hand?

Glad that you are doing well! Thank you for that information! I've done it before myself already, but it's definitely good to know...
