I've been looking around, and it seems that yes, if you sit with an atomiser dry burning by itself then it can reach temps high enough. However, dripping a couple of drops of eLiquid onto the atomiser brings the temp right down to just over 100C, which is brought down even further when you inhale, as there is extra airflow over the atomiser and more eLiquid is drawn into it.
Therefore potentially dry burning can produce acrolein, but if you're dry burning then there won't be a significant amount of glycerine on the atomiser to create acrolein. Therefore not an issue as far as I can see.
Dry Burn is not Recomended

How i see things
To creates Acrolein from e-liquid you would need a liquid that contains VG.
You would need to run low on juice to the point when not enough liquid is present to keep the filament below the conversion temp but enough to produce vapour. At this point you would get acid taste and the hotter vaper
The best way to avoid Acrolein production is make sure your filler is always kept wet and it has good contact with the bridge it is very important that it can wick if the filler has pushed up in the cart it will not make a good contact .
If the filament has the ability to wick (liquid present and good contact with filler in the cart) it cant get near to a temp that will convert the VG present to Acrolein.
This may not apply to some high voltage devices with LR atomizers

Never had an atty last so long as to get gunky or need cleaning. I used to wash them out with hot tap water if I was changing flavour but use different attys if needed now. If the juice gets to hot it tases burnt so is a good clue to alter your set up. To much vg in a liquid makes the atty run hotter to. I have never been into dry burns as I feel it wears the coil. Each to there own on that one though.

Concerning dry burning to clean you atty, don't you think you could just dry burn it to get all the gunk out then give it a bath of alcohol and sit it aside for it to dry.
While it dries you swap to a dry atty and the cycle is complete
Anyway, I just blow mine on a regular basis and do not have any issues but that's just me!

Hya guys
The casual lurker feeling to post for a change
Acrolein might be a concern of course, mainly for the vg lovers like me, so better to eliminate it to the best of abilities, one less substance = one less future worry
This is what I do regularly
- Usually clean atty´s in packs of 5 to 10
- rinse them individually with hot water
- mouth rinse them with hot water from both sides
- put them in ultrasound cleaner (70 watt tranducer) for a twin 3 min runs making sure they are totally water soaked inside, meanwhile move them around with tweezers (ultrasound tank content is destiled water with a cap drop of isopropyl alcohol)
- repeat mouth rinse
and then dry burn to my liking!
full process will take about half an hour for a 5 piece batch, also worth notice that out of luck or whatever else I never had a popped atty so far and I´ve run through probably a couple hundred from a lot of sources and on different formats
when I get to dry burning phase I bet there is no more than 0,001% of vg on any of these attys!
care to comment on this ? lol
