Unfortunately just like cigarettes, kids are going to get hold of e-cigs. Its inevitable.

Without looking at the link, I'm sure that this sort of thing will be used against us :(

However, if my kid was smoking, I would whole heartedly endorse our 'safer' alternative,,,,and F@ck the do-gooders!

I'm with Rusty on this one. My 'kid' was a smoker. Now he is a vaper. I know as a parent I shouldn't encourage him to do anything that is addictive and possible bad for him (as in the nicotine) but he's 21, been smoking since he was 15, and I prefer to encourage what I see as the safer option.

Well it's said that Nicotine is more or less the same as Caffeine, i don't see any age restrictions on Nescafe :p

Unfortunately my 3 sons (aged 21-25) just aren't interested and carry on with the rollies. They find my devices amusing rather than 'cool'. They accept it's a safer alternative but I guess they are in different places. You need to be at the position of feeling the long term affects of smoking. They are still at the feeling indestructible phase. Us aging (or older) smokers know better.

Plus nicotine has been shown time and time again to massivley reduce the chance of people developing both Parkinsons and Alzheimers disease's

That's a shame , but I was the same at that age , all we can do is try and talk some sense in to them .

Just a thought, as medical research using nicotine with Alzheimers and Parkinsons is now in its second year of clinical trials, and that clinical trials usually take around 5 years, does anyone see that if the trials are a success then nicotine could well end up classed as a medicine.

Where would that then leave us I wonder?

... with the rather fascinating situation of having tobacco cigarettes as medicinal products, I guess ;)

Always worth bearing that in mind. They've thought before about making cigarettes medicinal, and always decided against it. I can't - for the life of me - work out why. ;)

I remember this kicking off about 18 months ago with youtube vids of american teens using ecigs and saying how cool they were. Not much came of it.

Remember the disasters after schools gave out NRT to get kids off the smokes? There's good and bad here, and likely it will be used against us whether kids get ecigs or not. Give them some and we are giving them drugs, stop them getting them and we are keeping them on smokes!

"Even though people younger than 18 can purchase electronic cigarettes..."

They can? I always thought there was an over-18 only policy?

AIUI, legally, there's no restriction on age. The over 18 policy has been adopted by vendors, but it's not, AIUI a legal requirement.

E-cigs are not "quit smoking" devices - they are an alternative way to smoke, but with a much reduced risk profile. Believe this - it's true. E-cig users are NOT quitters.

That's very interesting , I suppose the main danger is teens not taking the appropriate care to keep there e juice away from toddlers.

No. it's to stop the kids getting addicted to nicotine in the first place. I wish I hadn't. But I am of an age where when I was a kid over 80% of people smoked and there was no known health risk. Now there is no real excuse.

I was very anti-smoking in my youth, until (ironically) my dad died of lung/bone cancer when I was 19,,,,that started me on the slippery slope in a strange way.

My sister (3 years younger than me) was smoking 5-10 a day when our dad was alive ('cos she was hard!), and he hated her doing it and doled out some inproportionate punishments. When he died, our mum used to feed her nicotine habit by giving her cigs - I had to stop this.

Ever the 'bright spark', I thought that if I asked for one everytime she offered my sister one, she would soon stop handing out the 'freebies' and my little sister would stop smoking. Unfortunately, I got hooked :(

I always yold you all that I was a Yorkshire Pudding! :marchmellow:

Well if they use this as an argument against it, it wouldn't make any sense for these reasons:
1. Its healthier for children if they vape rather than smoke.
2. Children will always experiment with drugs
3. Its easier to control access.

What we should stop is this 'e-cigs are healthy' talk. Addictions aren't healthy and the people must know that it is only healthy for SMOKERS and not for the general public.

Well it wouldn't be the first time that Tobacco was treated as a medicine....
