I have 3 young grandchildren and countless nephews and nieces. I smoke in the garden when in their company.
I know nicotine is a poison and is highly addictive.
My question is, How much Nicotine is left in the vapor once exhaled? Is there enough to make it still unadvised to vape in the same room as children?
Would you still treat vaping as a undesirable thing to do in front of children, they might think that its a safe way to partake in a "adult activity" and so be encouraged to start vaping?

As far as I recall there is little or no chance of "passive vaping".
My kids are very happy that I now use what they call my "pretend cigarette" - not stinky and also they are not so worried that I'm suddenly going to keel over and die any time soon!
They are subsequently very keen that their grandmother, my 60-a-day mother-in-law, ditches the fags and follows my example. In their eyes it would mean that she would spend more time playing with them as opposed to hanging out in the garden in the pouring rain every half hour, honking on some tax-dodging, smuggled euro-brand she got down at the car boot sale, and coming back smelling like a Chernobyl crematorium.
I gave her a USB eGo and enough high octane juice to sink a battleship when she came to visit. No disappointing ten second battery life rip-off, but a bona-fide proper e-cig complete with LR atomizer. She was very grateful and offered to pay me for it - I told her the best way to pay me back was to pack in the fags - after all, she is an important part of her grandchildren's lives and they want her to be around.
Sadly the last time she came to visit she had "forgotten" to bring it. Clearly she hadn't taken to it - I don't even think she'd given it a decent chance and had only appeared to use it to humour us - which is sad. She's a died in the wool Northern booze and fags lady and it's so deeply rooted in her regime I fear that nothing could persuade her to switch. She's only ten years older than me and yet she looks older than my mum.
I think you have to really want to make a change for it to stick.

Nice post, Jaded...humourous and poignant...I am sure this will be a familiar story for most of us. I remember...must be back in the 80s, when you could buy your own cigarette making kit...white paper, filter tip...all you had to do apparently was put in the tobacco...the claim was it was a healthier cigarette because you were only burning the tobacco!! People who tried soon reverted. Some people will try vaping as an alternative and also revert...it's a shame, but maybe she'll come round...did you get her some OKSmokey tobacco flavours?

I agree with what's been said and don't believe that vaping has any ill effects on those around us.
Whether we should be using them in front of children is more problematic.
My kids are adult smokers already and so its no problem for me in that sense. Quite the opposite in fact as I'd like them to switch to vaping. So far I have had little success as it's not 'cool' in their eyes. Secondly as fit young men they are at that feeling indestructible age and not feeling the effects of being a life long smoker like their pa!
I think we all will agree that non of us are about encouraging anyone, especially children, to become nicotine addicts and so if I had small children I may think about using it discreetly. My partner has young children and I must admit to vaping in the flat when they are here but in a different room.

Vaping what the hell I like (as usual) Sharing the joy of the SDK with pub-goers but enjoying the intensity of the HH357 at home and the sheer practicality and fafflesness (its a word i made up) of the Lil mama on the Touchwood. 306DCA..dripping monster

The consensus seems to be that second hand vapour isn't a concern. I've no idea but considering what's in it I'm not panicking.
I have young children and they have no idea that I vape in the same way they never saw me smoke. I don't think its a good idea to vape in front of little ones.

All the little ones in my family know I smoke, I tell them its bad of course and that they shouldn't do it when they grow up. But... I did that with my kids and they still all smoked :-( ! I think I'll continue to go outside in the garden and vape and treat it as a undesirable addiction.
I'm loving my Liberro e-cigs by the way, being a bit of a chain smoker it fits into my paws just nicely and I can take the odd drag as I did before. I smoke Bensons but I break them up into long slim roll ups, a old habit - Don't ask! Usually a pkt of 20 will last me 2 days and I am constantly smoking but a rollie will last a hour.

I disagree Neil , my little ones were worried sick about my smoking and when they see me vape , it reminds them I'm no longer risking my life with cigarettes and this reassures them I'm no longer smoking.
The amount of nicotine your exposing them to poses no health risks to them , just make sure the device and liquid is kept out of there reach , so they do try and emulate you.
Plus P.G vapor in the air acts as a germicide , reducing the risk of catching an airborne infection , Google: propylene glycol germicide
for proof of this.

Though this may sound strange I treat vaping pretty similar to smoking. I tend to go outside with my fellow smokers still (though I may not when it's sideways rain
) as I feel a little out of place. That is, I don't want to alienate myself from the smokers who may resent me being able to 'smoke' inside, and also from the nen-smokers, who may feel I'm using a loophole. My social life sucks enough as it is without being ostracised completely.
With regards to children it's a tough one. My youngest daughter (9) asked to try and I obviously told her no and that she wasn't old enough. "But you said it wasn't smoking Daddy" was her reply. The thing that worries me is if children see vaping as the norm and less harmful than regular cigs then it may be almost pre-determined that they will vape.
For anybody that says, tell them the dangers of nicotine addiction, yeah I really listened to that advice when I started smoking . Maybe it's better, where children are concerned, to keep them at a reasonable distance. I don't know really. Tough one.

I also don't want to jump on the "Vaping is OK" bandwagon, I'm still a nicotine addict and if a vape wasn't available i'd have a fag.

But I don't hide away my addiction, what's the point?

As I said Toby, it's a tough one. My eldest daughter (21) smokes and started smoking when I was beginning to suffer the effects of 40 a day. Like myself as a child, she would come home from school and tell her parents the damage smoking was doing to their bodies after Biology lessons. Nevertheless she still became a smoker even though she saw first hand the effect smoking was having on me. I won't go on and on about peer pressure etc etc but I just think our kids are going to either take our advice or find out the hard way. Both my daughters are chuffed to bits that I'm vaping and I'm not suggesting hiding away but I'm still not certain, especially with young children, the correct etiquette (though that's not the word I'm searching for).

When they get to that age of "try this" if they know about e,cigs thats got to be a good thing, and a preferred route,if it proves eventually to be a positive in the long term,--(imha)
Two of my teenage daughters 16/17 have dabbled with cigs but dont smoke, they grab an occasional lug on me e-cig instead --the buggers--now i dont think they will ever smoke the nasties, lol

Some very interesting replys and plenty of food for thought.. I know my ten year old GD will be "well impressed" at Grannys new gadget. Shes always asks "So what new gadget you got now Nan"! So yes if she does think about smoking in a few years at least she and the others will know there is a alternative. She will probably start to nag her Mum and Dad now to go down the vaping route.

My eldest son who's 22 doesn't smoke. Although he's has had a puff once or twice, he refused to give in to peer pressure on the whole (but he is an individual thinker, big respect for that). And also because I talked to him a lot about the "addictive personality", which he became aware about...

For anyone under 18 who asks to try, it is easy...it's against the law for an adult to give this to a child...just like the law on alcohol and certain age groups.
