Quote

Marina Picciotto, senior study researcher and professor of psychiatry at Yale University, said the research could be beneficial.

"Imagine a nicotine-based medicine which could only target those cells which stop eating and not trigger the need for tobacco," she said.

"This suggests it is possible to get the effect of appetite suppression without also triggering the brain's reward centres."

Side effects

Prof Picciotto cautioned that the impact of a nicotine-based medication would be limited because smokers who are leaner when they give up smoking only gain 2.5 kilos of weight on average.

Clinical trials in humans would also be necessary to explore the side effects on blood pressure.

Hmm.

No no no drugs are not the answer to change psychology, we need to treat the cause not the symptoms. Sigh.

I have to agree with Frog.
The best way to deal with weight gain is a good diet and regular exercise. It's a lifestyle thing there is no reliable short cut to weight loss. You want to lose weight change your lifestyle and find out what is causing the weight gain.
Granted people who give up smoking can gain weight, but that usually is short term.
My best advise is to see your doctor. They can give far better advice than I could.

The nicotine takes care of food cravings, but the worst thing about replacing cigarettes with ecigs was that my sense of taste came back. Eg) recentely I've developed a thing for roasted almonds (used to hate them).

Which reminds me is there any e-liquid which is known to numb taste buds in the same way that a cigarette would?

Most people with a weight problem are not eating due to hunger or cravings. They over eat due to an unhealthy relationship with food.

Most overweight people have the same 'relationship' with food as normal people do. The difference is overweight people may eat in higher quanties or frequencies, or have lower metabolism. I personally think that people are overweight, because we constantly have an over abundance of high calorie food, when the opposite was true for the tens of thousands of years.

People who quit smoking have to deal with a sudden decrease in metabolism and withdrawal symtoms which could be stifled by eating, so of course most quitters would probably gain weight. People who start smoking will get an increase in their metabolism and a decrease in their ability to smell and taste so they would probably loose weight.

No I never lost my taste or smell with smoking either, infact both have always been quite acute.

I have put on weight since I switched but only what I had lost in the previous couple of very stressful years. Haven't noticed a marked increase in hunger...pretty much eating what I always did  .

Well I could still taste and smell, but it was really dulled.

For instance: the other day I was taking a walk, I smelt something oddly sweet and I realized that I haven't smelt flowers for 7 years.
Another: My friend lit up a cigarette and it smelt as if he was puffing shit.

My taste and smell is good and is exactly the same as before I started vaping and I smoked for 50 years.

I have always loved the smell of flowers and believe it or not tobacco and still do.Posted Image

Me too Kenny, love tobacco smell, I am sad at the loss of a traditional tobacconist with that lovely smell.

Since quitting analogues last year, I've put on around two stone which is by no means bad on my part (I was underweight for my height and age anyway) and vaping certainly hasn't taken away my appetite at all. Yes, my taste and smell has returned (as well as many other benefits from giving up the weed) but strangely, I've not actually craved more food than I used to. So, unless I'm mistaken, it seems analogues suppressed my weight gain.

@frog, seabiscuit and roadhoguk.

This will give you all a rough idea of how bad (Americanised) we are now in this country..

I went to see my GP (for the first time in years) a couple of months ago looking to get advice for something to help me sleep, preferably herbal or at least non pharmaceutical (can't stand pharma drugs), after she'd stopped looking at me as though i was some kind of freak for not wanting Pharma drugs, she suggested, quite strongly that i should take...antidepressants!

I was gobsmacked, after only having just explained to her that i was looking for recommendations for herbal or non pharma solutions, and told her so.

She immediately said "Well, most people are on these drugs", I said "What do you mean most people are on these?", she said (quite matter of factly) "Oh, about 60% - 70% of the UK population are prescribed these drugs"!!!

I nearly fell of the chair.

6 or 7 out of 10 people in the UK (adults and kids) are regularly being prescribed and taking psychiatric drugs....anyone else see a problem with this?

I told her that i thought it was both disgusting and unbelievable so many people are being encouraged to take mind altering pharmaceuticals on a regular basis, considering one of the biggest reported 'side effects' of these things is *suicidal tendencies*!

She just raised her eyebrows and nonchalantly mumbled "That's how things are these days", to which i replied "That's how things are if GP's prescribe these things like sweets you mean!"

The atmosphere became immediately frosty and i was made very aware that my 'consultation' was over.

Bloody GP's are in bed with big pharma to such a degree, i'm willing to bet there was a Big Pharma salesperson hiding in the cupboard in just his boxers and socks.

Truly disgusting.

Posted ImageOh dear, your doctor sounds rather opinionated. Even the NHS, NICE and the Prescriptions Authority admit they don't have data (all they have is prescriptions issued, not patients prescribed for and the numbers of prescriptions I've seen would be nowhere near hers even at a 1-1 ratio) so I wonder on what she is basing her broad generalisation lol? Perhaps the number of patients she has force-fed the stuff or maybe she was just having a bad day brain-wise.

Unfortunately doctors are incentivised to prescribe drugs from certain companies. I found this out after being given a new antibiotic that crippled me for a week. Turns out this sort of reaction was not uncommon, but my GP was trying for a free holiday courtesy of the drug company sales rep.

So true. I used to work closely with doctors and could see the drug changes after the reps had been.Posted Image

Well my eyes have been opened by this thread. I thought all this had been reformed years ago but it seems not.

Maybe you should mention the Bribery Act next time... the nickname of the Serious Fraud Office isn't 'Nightmare on Elm Street' for nothing lol. Posted Image
