I'm a gamer at heart ever since I had my first home computer, the Sinclair ZX81 (with the infamous 16k memory pack that wobbled!). Then onto the ZX Spectrum 48k. After that, the Commodore Amiga 500, then A1200. Ditched home computers all together when the Sony PS1 came out. The PS2 was my last console. Now I re-live all those classic games I used to love (and some, still yet to complete) via emulators on my laptop. The only "modern" console we have in the house now is the recently purchase xbox 360 with Kinnect. I've had all off five minutes on it as it's mainly for my five kids. I nearly booted my 3 year old son up the rear twice while looking like a muppet waving my arms and legs trying to figure our kinnect adventures!

I much prefer the simplicity of old games that are not overcomplicated with fifteen billion buttons to press just to move your character jump and fire in one direction. Or, it could be that I'm "old" lol.

I like nothing more when I have half an hour to spare (rare in "one swoop") to relax and vape while playing Slam Tilt pinball (Amiga), or play Tomb Raider (PS1), or even Mario (SNES) and many more. I also play the GTA games too: especially San Andreas.

So what about you? Are you a retro gamer or prefer games of today?

I like them all, whether I am playing Jet Force Jemini on the N64, fiddling with my Virtual Boy, PC emulation of old games, or modern PC games in 3d vision, got a PS3, three XBOX360s, three PSPs, Wii, DS, 3DS, I love em all. The one thing I don't miss though is loading a game from a tape I got on the front of a magazine.

ZX81: Anyone remembers 3D Monster Maze? That game still goes down in history as the first to make me require a change of underpants! Yet - the ZX81 had NO sound, black&white blocky graphics!

Spectrum: I use the ZXSpin emulator. Accurate sound emulation with this one too (although can't say I miss the annoying "beeps!"). Ultimate Play the Games (better known as RARE these days) produced some brilliant Spectrum games like Jetpac, Lunar Jetman, Sabre Wulf, Knightlore, etc, etc. Favourites? Saboteur, Skool Daze, Mazogs, Splat! just to name a few.

I did a fair amount of programming on the above two machines too. Mostly in BASIC. I used to love typing in programs from magazines only to find they didn't work. I actually used to enjoy "debugging" them to make it work!

As for Pinball. Yep - I love those too. The ones that appeared on Amiga being my favourites (Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions/Slam Tilt). Slam Tilt I still play now (using WinUAE emulator).

ZX Spectrum games (depending on size) used to take on average five minutes to load. Enough time to nip down to newsagent, buy a paper, come back and find.... the game hadn't loaded because the cassette recorder volume wasn't correct or one of the leads not connected properly. Ahhhh yes. Sure can't say I miss that either heh heh. ZX Spectrum emulators allows for games to be loaded instantly.

Amiga games can sometimes take ages to load in emulators (exact disk drive speed as real Amiga) but fortunately you can speed up loading times dramatically. Who recalls the disk-swapping nightmares if you didn't have an external drive or games that came on 4 disks + like Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis or Simon the Sorcerer? Ruddy pain in the butt lol.

The Amiga has to be my favourite machine of all time. Not just for games. I also liked "drawing" (DPaint), composing music (OctaMED) and programming games (AMOS Professional).

Big gamer here...!!!

I remember and had them all and still have most stored away:

ZX80, ZX81, Spectrum, Atari, Coleco-Vision, NES, SNES, Nintendo-64, Commodore Amiga, Commodore 64, Tandy TRS-80, MegaDrive, XBOX, XBOX360, Sony Ps1, Ps2, Ps3, Wii, PSP, GameBoys and my trusty PC...

Must admit that my preference is the XBOX360 and my fave game is Call Of Duty MW2, Fable 3 and Mass Effect 2.

Don't get much chance to play them as I have 3 daughters who are all adicted and kick my ass at most games now!

My main gaming pleasure is Collecting (and playing) Boardgames....

Later...

I've had pretty much every console that's been out. I currently own the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, NDS XL, 3DS and PSP but none of them compare to the Panasonic 3DO from 18 years ago. Best console ever!!

I remember when games got harder and harder the higher up the levels you went, now they are just the same the whole way through:

Some kind soul has recently ported the Bungie classic "Marathon" ( which was Mac Classic OS only) to iPad - so for the first time in ages, I've been playing...
I won't slave for beggar's pay,
likewise gold and jewels,
but I would slave to learn the way
to sink your ship of fools

The best games for most of the above mentioned systems were written by Jeff Minter with many titles on his own publishing house called Llamasoft.

Personally I am still addicted to Gorf (played on my laptop nowadays under MAMe) & Missile Command (perfect for the touch screen phenomena that is my iphone).

My X-box (original) gets used by my son quite a bit but, for me, there is only ONE game on the X-box....Quantum Redshift

2 faves on pc are still Half Life & Unreal (various incarnations).

On my PSP I have a dozen or more games, most of which I haven't even tried! Why?....Wipeout Pure of course :)

I got a Wii too, fave game?.....Mario Kart

Drove me nuts that game!!! Never did complete it. Well. I did eventually by *cough* cheating... something I very rarely do. Honest!! Did manage to finish Manic Miner (that title tune was amazing for it's time!).

Fast forward to 3.25 of the youtube video to bypass the incredibly annoying Spectrum loading sequences (high-pitch wailing white noise!) to witness that great intro song (!):

Jeff Minter.... that guy's a legend! I used to love playing Revenge of the Mutant Camels. Wasn't that one shareware? Can't remember.

I remember a cartoon strip (if I find it I'll post it) that showed a kid being sent to his room after being naughty and there's nothing in his bedroom at all. Fast forward many years to today and kid gets excited at being sent to his room because it's got a computer/console/TV in it so he/she is well away!!

I have a wii and the PS3
I have had a master system, SNES, Megadrive, 3DO (a classy console at the time but underfunded), PS1 and PS2

Not a true comptetitor (unlike my sons) I don't venture into online stuff. I like the immersion of the newer stuff, great graphics help that but not gameplay. Just downloaded Streets of rage 2...just for the memories of playing it when my kids were small

Like story driven stuff like Heavy Rain, LA Noire and good sports sims like Fight Night, Madden and Fifa

Don't mind the odd shooter..Killzone 3 is awesome graphically but they bore me after a while

I second the Mario Kart comments..best game on Wii

I remember my dad borrowed this huge great box, no idea what it was called...played a game called Pong..hmm..how things have moved on
Vaping what the hell I like (as usual) Sharing the joy of the SDK with pub-goers but enjoying the intensity of the HH357 at home and the sheer practicality and fafflesness (its a word i made up) of the Lil mama on the Touchwood. 306DCA..dripping monster

I WAS THERE AT VAPEFEST 2010!
MISSED VAPEFEST 2011! Vapefest 2012 in August..worst time for me :(

I'm currently a bad company 2 player, before that was TFC for...years. It's pretty hard to go back now to play old games, there are also a lot of new games I don't like that much. I guess I am just FPS these days.

I'm pretty sure I have played on your server, Daz.

Yeah I love bad company 2 also. Just writing this in between games in fact. Always been Fps games for me, starting at doom and working through almost every one since. Shooting Americans and vaping away, lovely Sunday.
