Are others suffering from "speed of a dead frog"? performance on the forum? I've emailed Crossbow to let him know - sadly that's all I can do. Apologies to all

Prof - Thank God there is someone else - I was beginning to think my PC was shot to hell or my BB was playing up again!!!
I am having GREAT difficulty with the Forum at the moment. If I click on a Link it will sometimes open after a really long time or just come up with an error! Checked this in Opera, FireFox, Chrome and IE and all the same...
Other sites work as normal.

There is obviously something going on - I'm fine at the mo. Crossbow got back to me and said it was ok at that point but he would keep an eye on it...

It's often like that. Surprised you never noticed before.
That said, it's better than it used to be.

There's the odd occasion when the page gives up loading as the server took too long to respond but it happens so scarcely it's pretty bearable. I always assumed it was at high log in periods.

I am getting that ALL the time...
I had initially thought that there were "issues" with my Broadband because I live in a very rural area and have to get BB via a Line-Of-Sight wireless relay from the local village.
But as I said above, other sites load up with no problems at all - it just seems to be this Forum!

i have noticed slowness at times but its been perfectly okay lately.. pretty instant..
i dont think its the forum server or the forum software.. the data has to go though many steps on its way from the user to the forum server and back.. hold ups could be in any one of those many steps..
if it was the forum server everyone would be getting it.. the internet is a bit like a huge super road network.. traffic slow downs can be anywhere along the route and each route is different depending where it starts off from.. i have a good cable network connection its pretty snappy and i notice slow downs.. i am not getting any at all from this place.. i click on it quite often..
our little factory connection can be pretty sh-ty.. that is the service provider though and its normal.. this place is working fine on my home connection..

I think we did have a glitch yesterday as a number of people noticed - also I was connected at the time using the national university network - which is mega broadband... It's possible the glitch was either the server or at the UKV ISP end... At the moment I'm on Virgin, and it's plenty quick...

its possible i didnt try and connect during the possible small glitch.. but if it was the UKV server everyone that attempted to connect during the glitch would have notice it not just some.. all i can say is the place works fine for me.. but maybe i missed the glitch..
it must have been a lengthy one for you to have reported it prof.. whatever the cause..
software called traceroute can be bought.. it times the hops and logs the hold up points.. it tell folks exactly where the delays are.. its better than guessing..
without running something like traceroute it is impossible to know.. but when the jam is at the end of the route everybody gets it not just some..
a few weeks back i was noticing time outs but not lately.. if this place get busier its possibly during its busy periods time outs will become common..
time to spend more dosh on a better server then.. i would guess this place isnt on an expensive option..
forum software loads a servers CPU more than normal websites.. it has to generate the posts and threads on the fly.. so problems may not just be bandwidth ones.. i have been expected this place to show signs of overload for some time.. little inexpensive hobby servers soon grind to a halt if the traffic gets busy..
so far this one seems to be holding up okay.. websites all end up costing money to run if they get busy.. donations are the first step then adds.. the money has to come from somewhere..

ps.. link to trace software..

Crossbow needs to keep an eye on the number of users. Other forums I use often slowdown considerably when Google's indexing web crawlers start "doing over" a site. The user count goes above normal when this happens.

its still working fine for me and has been for the last few weeks.. i do spend too much time clicking on here.. so it it goes wrong i would soon notice..
i installed the fifteen day trial of the trace route software.. i might pay for it but i might not.. but if anybody is having problems the trial is a quick and easy way to find out where they are..
