Hi
I have COPD caused by cigarettes i started vaping about three months ago and have managed to to cut my smoking down to two a day.
i am now finding i get very short of breath for about five minutes after i vape. i am on the usual inhalers.
my question is have any official tests been done on the effects of vaper on the lungs.
thank you

Hi sleepy Joe

I'm sorry to hear of your condition.

Can I ask how your breath is after smoking a 'normal' cigarette ?

Maybe your having to suck harder on your vaporizer .. so finding one with an easier 'draw' could help.

As far as I'm aware there have been no tests carried out that involved people with serious lung problems.

I'd love to see some tests done on people who have been vaping a while, maybe something like a bronchoscopy. I'd especially like to know what happens to the PG/glycerol once it has entered the lungs, is just coughed up, or removed by the cilla that have recovered? does it dissolve through the lungs into the blood stream? Is is absorbed by the cells in the lung tissue and broken down?

Joe,

It might not be the vaping per sea that's causing the problem. . Shortness of breath is a common symptom when quitting smoking, see

What does you're doctor think?

Having been subjected to the horrors of a bronchoschopy I wouldn't wish one on anyone!
Shudders.

Joe, if you use predominantly PG liquid, this could possibly be the cause, an allergy to PG shows itself in a number of ways and this could be that, maybe try a VG majority liquid to see if the breathlessness decreases?

I'm not aware of any formal trials either but in general lung function is improved after swapping from smoke.

Some liquids make me wheezy and I've decided it might be sensitivity to particular flavourings.

It's not the same I know, but I can only say that my asthma is greatly improved since switching to vaping (I'm 9 months in now) an no liquid has made me wheeze at all.

It might well be allergies to certain juices / flavours, I guess the only way you'd know is by doing some experimenting.

I was diagnosed with COPD early last year and switched to vaping in September. Since then my lung function has improved slightly according to spirometry tests but I feel so much better than 'improved slightly'. I was a little disappointed that it had only gone up 5% but dr reminded me that if I had carried on smoking my levels would have decreased. I also wonder about PG, flavouring and where it ends up? Have not mentioned my e-cig (Trog's SD1) to the doctor, I know exactly what he'd say in his ignorance....... 'stop that, it can't be doing you any good'. Never mind that he smokes 40 odd a day!

General feedback is that people do report increased lung capacity, and being able to do certain activities of exertion that they could not while smoking.

Personally I have been able to do active sports activities (like squash) that I wouldn't have even thought about doing while I was smoking.

One of the best results I've heard from a customer is someone on [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salbutamol"]Ventolin[/ame] while smoking, no longer uses it...

I don't know what to suggest Joe, except, if it is at all possible, to cut out the two real cigarettes you are smoking every day, and see if that helps. For someone with good lung function, 2 cigs wouldn't be too bad. But with COPD, even 2 is going to affect your breathing capabilities.

But I agree of course, that some clinical trials should be carried out as soon as possible into the effect of regular inhalation of VG, PG, or PEG, and flavourings, on the lungs.

thank you for your replies
i don't think i have much lung left after over 50 years of cigarettes.
i must admit since vaping i am doing more things and do feel better.
i cut 38ml 50/50 with vg and find this very satisfying
i will give it a bit longer as it might be my body just changing.

There was the trial of PG on mice that was done years ago... that showed only beneficial results.

Like it or not ... the day will come that trials are started, I just hope that 1. the trials are fully independent and 2. no decisions are made until the full results are known.

Inhalation toxicity for all three is already documented and none shows anything above what you might expect - that is, there are no urgent caveats. That's not to say that a very, very small minority of people may show adverse reactions to one or more of the glycols generally used, but we're talking statistically vanishingly small.

Flavourings, on the other hand, are a different thing altogether - there is very little background to read up on, and even less information as to what's in a lot of flavourings - it's one area that we do need more information on.

E-cigs are not "quit smoking" devices - they are an alternative way to smoke, but with a much reduced risk profile. Believe this - it's true. E-cig users are NOT quitters.

Hello Bardle, I felt pretty much the same as you back in September 2009. Was also on Golden Virginia roll-ups and smoked for 42 years. I started on 24mg PG tobacco flavoured and am still on exactly the same today! See post 7. I had another spirometry test just this month and the levels are the same - all good! I feel more fit today than this time last year.

hi maryl. 4got to say i smoked for forty years, tried champix, willpower etc!! nothing worked, it got so bad i wasnt able to walk the dog without stopping every few steps tried the cheapo e cigs for a few days, didnt like them, got a sdmk2 in silver, it burned the spring out twice , took it back to tw in darwen, got a black sd2, last week its been great, so far!! also got a tornado t while i was there, and some other goodies!!! do prefer the tornado when i am out, sd2 is a bit daft looking, am using 26g bubblegum at the moment, , i cant seem to put it down, ordered a few more flavours from tw, wish i known about e cigs sooner, will keep using this forum, for advice , so much better than the tw one!

nether would i.. its not an entirely pleasant experience.. he he he

double shudders.. it feels like having a half inch diameter hose pipe forcibly rammed up your bloody nose and down into you lungs..

adverse effects to e smoking have been reported but so have zillions of beneficial ones.. not official but if enough folks say you get wet by going out into the rain i recon it can be considered "research" and maybe even believable..

trog

ps.. long tern effects are not known and aint likely to be for at least another ten years.. :)

I would be happier if the juice was batch tested. This is the only suppplier I know of that does this:

All juice suppliers should be able to do this.

Big Pharma use PG in NICORETTEĀ® QuickMist Mouthspray.
Contains nicotine.
Other ingredients are: propylene glycol, anhydrous ethanol, trometamol, poloxamer 407,glycerol, sodium hydrogen carbonate, levomenthol, mint flavour, cooling flavour, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, hydrochloric acid, purified water.

Big Pharma does'nt use ingredients that are bad for you, do they ? :unsure2:

COPD is a bitch . I ve got it (most long term smokers have) but very early stage thank christ . There might be allergies involved but I reckon them 2 fags a day arent helping . I ve seen other vapers give up their ecigs coz it made them cough etc but they were never tobacco free long enuff to feel the true benefits. When I have had relapses the 'neither arthur or martha ' situation has also irritated my lungs briefly . I think something happens (and this is only my experience!) after a period without tobacco (for me it was 14 days ) and your lungs settle .I dunno what ,maybe the hairs in your throat grow back or your lungs revert to their 'true' size ? You have to rememner that tobacco is a bronchodilator ,just like the ventolin inhaler, so you are bound to feel tighter in the chest when you vape! I have also have been on the hardcore purple inhalers but I dont seem to need them any more .
However it remains a fact that all inhaled particulates (from housedust to flour to woodsmoke or exhaust fumes) cause respiratory problems . If I was you I d vape at high strength (3.6+)and absorb nicotine like a cigar or pipe smoker thru your cheeks ,top of your throat and nose . Its not easy for a fag smoker to switch technique but if you can crack the method its a decadent pleasure .
So far as testing of the long-term effects.....we're it mate !
